School Overview
The Living and Learning school is a small, independent, parent-run school located in the Village of Queen Charlotte on Haida Gwaii. The school is operated by the Queen Charlotte Youth Education Society, a registered non-profit, charitable organization. We offer a holistic approach to education that nurtures the inner spirit and strives to meet the needs of the whole child. The school is certified by the Independent School Branch of the Ministry of Education and follows the BC curriculum.
MISSION, VISION AND VALUES
Our mission is to provide a creative, empowering learning environment that stimulates children’s natural curiosity, allows each child to develop his or her own interests and encourages skills for life long learning. We believe that children who learn in a safe, supportive and co-operative atmosphere develop self-worth, self-expression and personal power, enabling them to grow into strong, creative and caring human beings.

What we’re about
One of the school’s objectives is to build a community where students, staff and parents feel empowered and supported. The school community often becomes an extended family for students and staff. The teaching staff consists of three BC-certified teachers (one of which is the principal) and educational assistants as needed to support inclusion. Parent and community volunteers and short-term instructors for special units or activities are utilized as needed.
WHY YOU’ll Love It Here
Our school offers small classes of up to approximately 10 students, lots of parent support and openness to your creativity.
Our small size allows us to take part in more diverse opportunities than a larger school.
Community & School Culture
School Community
We create a learning community with our students, supported by parents, teachers and community volunteers. Committed to this, our parent-run school builds on the BC curriculum emphasizing social and environmental responsibility.
While academic skills are of high priority at the Living and Learning School, we believe it is equally our responsibility to teach life skills and to nurture attitudes of respect, self-esteem and values that will ensure the students live positive and productive lives as they grow older.
Our Community
The Village of Queen Charlotte (in the process of returning to the Haida name of Daajing Giids) is located at the south end of Graham Island on Haida Gwaii in the northwest of BC. The village has a population of about 1000 people – a number that increases substantially in the summer when visitors come to experience the natural beauty and culture of the islands. The neighbouring First Nations community of Skidegate is also home to about 1,000 people, and there is much flow between the two villages in terms of events, relationships and shopping.
Known as the Galapagos of British Columbia, the islands are a rainforest of natural beauty and wildlife. Haida and settler cultures add to the diversity, while the mild climate allows for lush vegetation and abundant wildlife. People here enjoy the slower, simpler pace of life and the strong community bonds between residents.
There are many outdoor activities to pursue, including kayaking, hiking, surfing, fishing and hunting, and local food harvesting. You can also participate in cultural activities such as music performances, art shows and Haida events.
There is a hospital, hiking trails, community hall and youth centre in Haida Gwaii but the biggest amenity is the beach! Skidegate also is home to the Haida Heritage Centre and Museum, as well as community halls for events.
Salary and Benefits
Salaries range between $50,000 and $55,000. Our four-day work week (Monday to Thursday) will allow you to have greater work-life balance and more time to get out to enjoy the outdoors!
