School Overview
St. Margaret’s School (SMS) is an all-girl, day and boarding school located on a quiet 22-acre campus in Victoria on the scenic west coast of British Columbia, Canada. We provide a highly personalized learning experience from preschool to Grade 12 that fosters confidence and enables girls to thrive.
Why teach at St. Margaret’s School?
At SMS we know girls. We know how to spark their imaginations, cultivate their curiosity and raise their expectations of themselves. Our teachers have the flexibility to adapt to how they teach to draw on girls’ strengths, capture their interest and actively engage them in learning.
Our Mission, Vision and Values
Our Mission: Empowering her to set her own course and shaper her own dreams.
Our Vision: Confident girls. Inspiring women.
Our Values: Integrity, Excellence, Service, Leadership, Girl-Centred, Courage, Global Minded.
Our Unique Programs
St. Margaret’s is Canada’s first all-girls STEM school. Beyond an acronym for science, technology, engineering and mathematics, STEM is an inquiry-based, interdisciplinary educational philosophy centred on questioning, observation, reflection and communication. STEM learning is supported at all levels and across all disciplines. By exposing girls to STEM early and encouraging them as they grow, we hope to inspire a generation of female leaders in traditionally male-dominated fields.
The Community
St. Margaret’s School resides on 22 beautiful acres within a safe and quiet residential community that is a 10-minute drive to the heart of Victoria. The quiet neighbourhood is set back from the bustling city yet is still within walking distance to all amenities. Our location gives you the quiet serenity of a friendly neighbourhood, with the option of a quick drive or walk to the closest amenities.
School Community
We offer a highly personalized learning experience in an environment where girls are engaged, take risks, gain confidence and discover their passions. Our academic program is supported by experiential programs that offer meaningful opportunities for students to apply their knowledge and see the value of what they learn in class. Learning this way is less fragmented and takes place authentically, through social, physical or academic exploration and trial and error. Students are able to see how subjects are interconnected and develop skills and attitudes that could never be taught in a classroom.
Regular assemblies celebrate our values, highlight student successes and exemplify student leadership in action.
Lifestyle and Recreational Opportunities
The immediate community surrounding the school has walking and biking trails, coffee shops, grocery stores and restaurants. Victoria has a range of amenities including museums, unique local restaurants, shopping, recreation centres, hospitals, museums, art galleries and more. We are located close to the ocean and a variety of lakes from which to enjoy aquatic activities such as swimming, kayaking, canoeing, scuba diving or boating.

Why you’ll love it here
We offer a supportive work environment and foster growth in not just our students, but in our staff as well. Our school motto – “Service with Love” – is also a school-wide value that promotes and maintains mental and emotional health while at work.
Teachers are paid for their extracurricular commitments, which helps integrate staff into our community and build relationships with students. Class sizes are kept at or below 18 students, regardless of the foundation, middle or senior year class levels. We also schedule collaboration time right into the timetable, allowing teachers to meet with each other to work on programs, lesson plans and curriculum development. Our instructors work a maximum of 25 hours a week, including prep and instructional time, which helps maintain a healthy work-life balance and mitigate the potential for burnout.

At St. Margaret’s School we provide time to prepare lessons, assess student work, engage in conversations with colleagues on best practices and collectively prepare for curriculum changes. This includes one hour for bi-weekly teacher collaboration, one hour for bi-weekly assembly time and up to 4.5 hours per week of prep time (for full-time FTEs, pro-rated for part-time FTEs).
