Recruiting Candidates

Recruitment is the process of finding and attracting the most capable job applicants so that you can create a pool of well-qualified candidates. Recruiting begins when new recruits are sought and ends when the applications are submitted.  This is a very important part of the selection process – after all,  your chances of finding a well-matched candidate are reduced if you are not able to draw from a large talent pool.

In the past, print media was the primary source of information for job-seekers. However, job-seekers are increasingly turning to the Internet to find employment information.  As an employer, you need to respond accordingly to ensure you are reaching the people you want.

Some methods you may want to consider include:

• Advertising positions on targeted job boards
• Sending job postings to targeted e-mail ListServs
• Promoting positions on social media
• Requesting that your position be featured in Make a Future’s e-newsletter
• Profiling your jobs on the Makeafuture.ca homepage
• Recruiting on college and university campuses
• Advertising in newspapers and magazines

Before deciding on a particular approach, think about where the candidate pool you are trying to attract is most likely to visit. For example, the “Generation Y” group is more likely to search for jobs online rather than looking in a newspaper. This means that if you are hoping to attract applicants from this group, you may only want to use online advertisements.
