Careers in Education That Don't Require A BEd

If you're not a teacher and you don't have a Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree, there are many career opportunities for you in BC education.

School districts employ nearly 25,000 non-teaching support and exempt staff in trades and maintenance, business administration, transportation, and school/classroom support services roles.

In the last school year, 1,638 non-teaching job opportunities were advertised on Makeafuture.ca. Over a quarter of those job vacancies were in teaching/special education assistant roles, and a large number were in skilled trades and maintenance.

Currently, there are numerous opportunities at school district offices for administrative clerks, accountants, information technologists, human resources staff, and other office administrators.

In the school district's facilities maintenance department, there is a high demand for building service workers/custodians, HVAC technicians, carpenters, electricians, plumbers, electricians, and facilities and operations managers.  Mechanics and bus drivers are also highly sought-after professionals in the transportation department.

In support of student learning, school districts are almost always hiring:  teaching assistants and special education assistants, and child and youth care workers.

There are likewise many other important support roles like supervision assistants, food technicians, library technicians, career program facilitators, and grounds people that school districts recruit for year-round.
