District Overview
Positive relationships exist among educational partner groups, and the district makes a concerted effort to involve partner groups in discussions about student achievement. This attitude is exemplified in our mission statement, “Empowering all Learners to Thrive.”
Professional Learning
We believe the implementation of a renewed curriculum is simply an opportunity to build on the amazing work that teachers in our district are already deeply involved in. Collaborative learning opportunities that sustain ongoing professional growth are a central way that we can support and learn from each other to build on the vibrant school experiences our learners are engaged with. We currently offer:
- a new teacher’s mentorship program run by the Okanagan Skaha Teachers’ Union.
- inquiry groups on the renewed curriculum, Indigenous practices, assessment, reading, outdoor learning and inclusion.
Regional Diversity
School District No. 67 is located in the beautiful Okanagan Valley in the interior of British Columbia, Canada. The school district is centered around the cities of Penticton and Summerland – about a four hour drive east of Vancouver, B.C. and just north of the U.S. border.
The area population is about 60,000 living around two picturesque bodies of water (Lake Okanagan and Skaha Lake), in the heart of wine and fresh fruit country.
According to Environment Canada, the Penticton area has the most attractive climate of all Canadian cities with over 2,100 hours of sunshine and only 33 centimeters of rain annually. This area has a comfortable climate year round with hot, dry summers and is one of the few places in Canada with short, mild winters.
The combination of good working conditions, strong community support for schooling, and excellent recreational amenities makes the area a highly desirable home.
Specialty Programs
Our schools offer a comprehensive program including the humanities, mathematics, arts, sciences, fine arts, technology, languages, French Immersion, Advanced Placement, physical education, English as a Second Language, and International Baccalaureate. The district has a proud history of excellence in athletics, fine and performing arts and academic pursuits such as debating and physics Olympics. Our international student program welcomes students from around the world.
Community Culture
Recreational activities in modern facilities include an indoor pool with water slide, ice arena, curling rinks, dance studios, local live theatres and an indoor soccer facility. The city of Penticton has a modern airport with daily flights to Vancouver and Calgary.
Penticton and area is a highly desirable place to live as it offers a wide array of sport tourism and outdoor adventure opportunities. Enjoy skiing or snowboarding at Apex Mountain Ski Resort (an easy 45 minute drive from Penticton), rock climbing at the Skaha Bluffs, mountain biking along the Kettle Valley Railway Trail, swimming at the beach, floating down the river channel, kayaking, hiking fishing and golfing at one of the 28 golf courses in the local area – the area offers endless hours of outdoor fun.
Draw for Employees
Our district employs 900 teachers, support staff and administrators. All community partners are involved in our school and district planning and goal setting. The Okanagan Skaha Teachers’ Union has a strong District Professional Development Committee that coordinates professional development days.
